Background of the Study

Traditional media, including radio, television, and newspapers, has long played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, particularly in rural areas. In Zuru Local Government Area (LGA), Kebbi State, traditional media outlets serve as the primary means of communication and cultural transmission, bridging generational divides and helping to maintain local customs, languages, and traditions. Through storytelling, music, dance, and folklore, traditional media has facilitated the preservation of cultural practices that might otherwise be lost to modernity or external influences (Umar & Bello, 2023). As globalization and digital media technologies continue to impact the region, traditional media’s role in cultural preservation is more important than ever. This study aims to explore how traditional media in Zuru LGA contributes to cultural preservation, particularly in the face of rapid technological advancements and changing socio-economic dynamics.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In the digital age, many rural communities, including Zuru LGA, face the challenge of balancing the preservation of traditional culture with the pressures of modernization. The emergence of digital media platforms has created new ways for people to consume information, but it has also posed a threat to the continuity of cultural practices, especially among younger generations. Traditional media in Zuru LGA, while still influential, may struggle to compete with the global reach and appeal of digital platforms. The problem, therefore, is understanding how traditional media can adapt and continue to play an effective role in the preservation of culture in Zuru LGA, despite these challenges. This study seeks to address this issue by examining the impact of traditional media on cultural preservation in the region.

This study is significant because it will provide insights into how traditional media can be leveraged to safeguard cultural heritage in rural communities. The findings will be useful for policymakers, cultural advocates, and media practitioners seeking to enhance the role of traditional media in preserving cultural identities in the face of globalization and technological change.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on the role of traditional media in cultural preservation in Zuru LGA, Kebbi State. It will not explore the impact of digital media or other forms of modern technology on cultural practices.
